Person Of The Year

Comments (1) | Print | Email

Madam,

Not so long ago Cavan folk voted for Mrs. Margaret Basmajin. She works every day for Positive Age, Community Centre, Castlemanor Retirement Village, Billis, Cavan.

She was voted Person Of The Year because of the great work she and her helpers do for lonely and housebound people. They get phone-calls several times a week asking if all is well; how they are keeping... This means a lot to people living alone; it may be the only conversation they have in a whole day.

This group at Positive Age receive no funding at all! Isn't this incredible when we hear of money wasted every day? If you know someone re-elected lately, mention this cause to them. Then just maybe something will be done to help this well-deserving group.

Something has to be done. Now!

    Sir/Madam

I write from Boston and know the work that Margaret Basmajin does for Positive Age and senior interests in Cavan and Margaret's deep roots in the town. I am shocked that there is no funding. Voting can make changes. In the US elections of 2000, 70 % of those between the ages of 65 and 75 voted while only 32 % of 18 to 24-year-olds actually voted indicting that the positive age community can have a significant say. I would urge every senior and every potential positively aged citizen to write or email their local publically elected councilman, minister, TD's,et to support Positive Age which supports our parents, grandparents and other relatives and bolsters the local community.
