Madam,
One reads with amazement in The Anglo-Celt of July 30 that parking charges may increase in Cavan town. It has been clear that since the introduction of paid parking in Cavan that businesses within the parking zone have been adversely affected. To increase parking charges in the current recessionary times will make the situation worse for business people.
It's an extraordinary unfairness that shoppers have to pay for parking in Cavan town centre (and other county towns) while shoppers in out-of-town businesses have free parking. Either parking charges are extended to out-of-town centres or abolished everywhere. It is up to Cavan County Council to take action to give a level playing field for in-town and out-of-town businesses.
Yours,
Pat Nally,
Mullingar,
Co. Westmeath.
Have your say. .

I read with interest Mr. McNally's comments. Parking charges are in larger towns to encourage business and ensure a good 'turn-over' of traffic or 'parking events'. It is estimated that a successful parking charge regime on a typical high-street results in around 7-8 vehicles using each space per day- so it goes without saying that such a turnover actually helps businesses benefit from a potentially high number of customers. Perhaps, Mr. McNally could actually carry out a survey in Mullingar or whichever town he is based and then comment further...
Cavan needs business- and an efficent parking scheme will actually help! I am not sure of the Council's precise plans, bu****hink it is an opportune time for a review of the current system to take place, not withstanding the fact that substantially increased charges would not generally be welcome.

Parking charges in Cavan town should be abolished. These charges are punitive, and create another obstacle for the rate paying businesses and traders of the town to overcome.
Consider the town geography, that the town centre is basically in a hollow, with hills up on all sides. Take note that the population of the town are the easiest customers to reach, and while strolling downhill to town to shop or avail of services on offer may be leisurely, the burden of carrying multiple shopping bags home, uphill, is beyond tolerable for most.
Many prefer to take their car into the town centre, carrying children or other passengers with them. They need to be able to park unhindered, and with ease, in the town centre. The fact that as soon as you present yourself in the town to shop, having travelled to town by car, you are immediately penalised with car parking charges is not very encouraging.
With regards to our Northern Irish neighbours, who some say park for free, common sense would seem to suggest to the powers that be in the Town Council, that being a border trading town, it would be worth considering installing multiple currency acceptors on the pay parking meters. note that in Enniskillen, the few pay parking areas, have meters which accept both Sterling and Euro coins, at a somewhat one sided exchange rate.

I refer to the smash and grab raids in Cootehill and note that the Hymac mechanical digger used in extricating ATM machines and their contents from bank premises in Cootehill to the detriment of the bank's profit and loss account should qualify as a Special Purpose Vehicles SPV, which was part of the recently enacted NAMA legislation.

In most cities around the world , the businesses have to supply their own car parks, in Cavan it is the Rate/Tax payers who pay for car parks.
One of the reasons other than parking ---that sends people north to do their shopping,--- is the high prices one has to pay in Cavan Town, greed is out of control, maybe some businesses have to pay high rents to greedy landlords, so they pass on the high costs to the shoppers,
