Vox Pop: Should town councils be abolished?

The An Bord Snip Nua report has generated quite a reaction for many of its proposals, including one that town councils should be abolished and their functions absorbed by county councils.

With three town councils in the county - Cavan, Belturbet and Cootehill - there are many views on the issue in Cavan. Town councillors, however, adopted a motion at the Association of Municipal Authorities of Ireland (AMAI) conference last week that town councils serve an important function in local government and should not be abolished.

The Anglo-Celt's Rachel McGovern went out and about in Cavan town last Friday to find out how people in the area feel about the proposal in the McCarthy report to abolish the local authorities...
