Presentation of Tidy Town warden badges to Ballyconnell School children in May 1968.

Glance into the past

Madam, It was great to see the photo from 1968 in the Celt. All the children from the town collected litter and were given this reward. Ballyconnell won the All-Ireland award twice in the 1970s. The man standing is Master Michael Dolan, Snugborough. He taught woodwork at Bawnboy tech. His daughter Concepta teaches in the Poor Clares school in Cavan. The two below him are unknown to me, perhaps someone from Board Fáilte would know them. My brother Padraig is in the centre of the photo. He was just five at this stage as he was born May 9, 1963. He died on April 15, 1984 from cancer just before his 21st birthday. Declan O'Neill is the child behind him. He was our next door neighbour in Church Street. His mother Philip was our teacher in Ballyconnell NS. His father Bill was a garda who became detective sergeant in Cavan and lived at Keadue Lane, Cavan. Declan lives in Cavan. Mrs O'Neill is retired. Her husband passed some years ago. Thanks for a glance into the past. Keep up the good work. Kind regards, Sean Cassidy, Carrowmore Meadows, Ballyconnell
