On Monday night last, Cavan Drama Festival Committee held a Reception in the Courthouse, Cavan to accept the presentation of two new perpetual trophies to celebrate the Festival's 50th Anniversary. One of the trophies was presented by Mr. Tom Fitzpatrick in memory of his first wife, Betty Cullen, who was responsible for the inception of the Festival. Mr. Jim Scanlon presented the other trophy which will be awarded for the Best Set in the Open Section of the Festival. Philip Doherty, a pupil at Corlurgan N.S. who was placed second in the INTO National Handwriting Competition, which was organised as part of the INTO 125th anniversary year celebrations. Philip, who won the prize in Category 3, which included all 3rd and 4th classes in the country, is son of Mel and Rosaleen Doherty, Gortnakesh, Cavan.
