Our picture shows thatcher John Coyle, Corcloghan, Ballyhaise, Co. Cavan ( behind ladder ), at work on the roof of Mr. Fannin's grocery and hardware premises at Drung, Co. Cavan. Mr. Fannin is seen at the foot of the ladder. Mr. Fannin started in business in March, 1930, and his premises must be one of the last, if not the last, thatched shop in the country. Mr. Coyle has been a thatcher for 40 years, and followed in the footsteps of his father, July 1970, issue 6474

On Saturday last, in very cold conditions, 12 - year old Patrick Graham, St. Phelim's Place, Cavan, swam a 3 - mile crossing of Lough Ramor, Virginia, in 1 1/2 hours. He was accompanied in the water by well - known Cavan swimmer Sean Walsh. This must be a unique achievement for such a young Irish boy.
