Origins in The Widow’s

Origins presents Yukina and special guests at The Widow’s Bar, Belturbet this Friday, October 29, at 10pm.

Yukina came about as a way to bring together all the genres that influence frontman Stuart Doyle. “Getting a band together took a while the first attempts were unsuccessful, so I [went] off to Spain for six months and played solo gigs. It was there I learned to give it my all, to believe in the soul of the song,” said Stuart.

Returning to Ireland with a new zest and enthusiasm for gigging, Stu played with the short-lived MoCrac and was then recruited to play with Dublin rockers Melted, all the time working on his own material in his home studio. After producing a demo with his sister Julie Doyle called Comin’ Round, he enlisted Alan Sheridan, Scott Davis, Mark Carroll and Myri Leon along with Julie. “The mix of musicians seemed right, a blend of influences that suited the original idea.”

Admission is free. See www.myspace.com/yukinaa.

Charity table quiz

A charity table quiz will be held in the Seven Horse Shoes, Belturbet this Thursday, October 28, at 8.30pm with proceeds going to Tibetan refugees in Upper Dharamsala, India. Belturbet woman, Karina Charles (known for work on Northern Sound FM as well as her music, including performance with the Blue Valentine’s Night Of Tom Waits Music) is travelling to McLeodGanj, a northern Indian hill town, home to the Dalai Lama and thousands of Tibetan refugees. McLeodganj was completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1905, but in 1960, the Indian government allowed Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, to set up the administrative headquarters of the Tibet government in exile in McLeodganj. Since then the beautiful hill station became the site of a Buddhism learning and pilgrim centre. It is also known as ‘Little Lasha’ for its Tibetan culture which was brought by the Tibetan refugees who settled here. Thousands of Tibetans cross the Himalayas every year to reach McLeodGanj, many children without parents. The money from the quiz will be used to upgrade classrooms and buy supplies. Karina will be teaching English and basic computer skills.

“The quiz is a fun way of raising some money. It’s just a few euro to us, but is worth so much more in India,” says Karina. A table (up to four people) costs €30.
