What different types of wedding dresses are there?

Buying a wedding dress is possibly one of the most important decisions that a woman will make in her life. Not only do you want something that looks beautiful but you also want to achieve this look without breaking the bank. But with so many different types of wedding dresses out there it can be hard to choose the one that is right for you. So, let's start with the basics - what are the different types of wedding dresses which are available?

Mermaid

The mermaid wedding dress is sometimes referred to as a fishtail dress as it is one that skims down the body and hugs the figure until it reaches the knees where it flares outwards. This dress is a good option for someone who doesn't want something too flashy or showy as it makes less of a statement than the ball gown dress, but is for someone who still wants to feel feminine as well. This is a dress that has become more popular over the last couple of years and is a bit of deviation from tradition. This dress is perfect for anyone with an hourglass figure as it clings to your curves, emphasising them, but can also work for a straight figure, giving the illusion of curves.

Ball Gown

The ball gown looks like a Princess dress, the sort that Cinderella would have, and is probably the most traditional wedding dress that there is. It has a corset-style top and then big skirt section. It is probably the dress that you decided that you wanted when you were a little girl. This dress is perfect if you're a pear, apple or hourglass shape, or if you're fairly top heavy as it helps to balance this out and draw away from this. It is the most popular wedding dress and the corset style top is also great for holding in any wobbly bits you may have!

Column

The column dress is, as the name suggests, a dress that runs straight down to the floor and doesn't flair out at any point. This is very flattering for those without many curves or with a more athletic and boyish figure as it simply goes straight down. This dress is fairly understated unlike the ball gown style and so if you are looking for something that will attract less attention, then the column dress may be a good option for you to go for.

This dress is also fairly popular with older brides too due to its subtlety, although it is in no way restricted to them. As you can see, there are plenty of different types of wedding dresses and there is bound to be one that suits you perfectly. This is by no means an exhaustive list and there are plenty more options which may be less common. Whether you choose to buy your wedding dress in a store or buy your wedding dress online, you're sure to look beautiful on your big day.
