Cavan connection in colleges' final

DIT's Martin Reilly.

While most players in Cavan have their feet up at this stage and enjoying the winter break a trio of Breffni players are busy preparing for a league final with DIT against Cork outfit UCC.

The league competition was due to finish last week but weather pushed the fixture back to this Thursday and all three players are hoping the game is completed this side of Christmas.

On the team, which is being managed by Drumgoon’s Michael Hannon, Killygarry’s Martin Reilly is joined by fellow Cavan men Gearoid McKiernan and Daniel Graham.

With the benefit of the current winter break being imposed by the GAA constantly being debated throughout the country at present there is no doubting the fact that third-level players are not getting a sufficient break from football over the course of the GAA calendar year.

McKiernan in particular has had a busy winter period as his club Swanlinbar wait for the Ulster Junior Football Championship Final to go ahead against Monaghan side Corduff.

The Dublin college, who in recent years have had a strong link with Cavan, have had a fine league campaign thus far and can proudly a 100% winning record. Hannon’s charges opened their league campaign with a fine win over UCD and they followed that up with wins over NUI Maynooth and Carlow IT in the group stages before going on to secure victories over Cork IT and last year’s Sigerson Cup champions DCU in the knock-out rounds.

After such a promising league campaign there is no denying that the three Cavan men will be looking to sign the year off on a high and kick on for the Sigerson Cup after Christmas.

The draw for the college’s main football competition, which is in its centenary year, takes place today (Wednesday December 8).
