David Givney, Cavan in action for Ulster.

Givney’s transfer to Ballymun goes through

While summer transfer stories are typically the reserve of soccer stars, two key Cavan footballers are making headlines as they seek new adventures.

Mountnugentman David Givney has had his transfer to Dublin giants Ballymun Kickhams accepted, while Crosserlough’s Dara McVeety has notified county boss Terry Hyland of his intention to spend this summer in Boston.
The cut and thrust of the ultra-competitive Dublin Senior Championship with Ballymun will mark a radical departure for the man who has been the central figure in Mountnugent’s campaigns in both the Cavan Intermediate Championship and Division 2 All County League Football.
In 2012, Ballymun won their first ever Leinster Senior Football Final, defeating Portlaoise, in Mullingar, before losing out in the All-Ireland Final to St Brigid’s on the following St Patrick’s Day.
Givney’s switch to Ballymun will see him join up with fellow Cavan footballer Michael Brady, who was part of the U21 team for their successful Ulster Championship campaign in 2012. Brady transferred to the Dublin club last summer.
Last year was a memorable one for Givney as he lined out for Cavan in their All-Ireland quarter-final defeat to Kerry when he notched a point, he won the Sigerson Cup with Dublin Institute of Technology, and also represented Ulster in the Railway Cup.
Givney’s transfer will not alter his role as an important fixture on the county team, where he has been deployed by Hyland both in midfield, and occasionally full forward, where he lined out in the recent Ulster Championship defeat against Armagh.
Terry Hyland confirmed on Cavan TV’s Gaelic Football show on Monday evening that McVeety will join hundreds of students nationwide who have finished university and are eager to enjoy a summer in Massachusetts. It is understood McVeety will play football in Boston.
The Crosserlough player’s absence from the Cavan seniors is a significant blow. He would have been a regular starter under Hyland in a hybrid wing half forward sweeper role.
Meanwhile, Cavan County Board was fined €5,000 and two players have been banned for their part in the melee with Armagh at the Athletic Grounds.
The decision to ban forward Martin Dunne and defender Feargal Flanagan for one match each was accepted by the county board. However Dunne would have missed the Westmeath Qualifier clash through an injury, a hand fracture, sustained during the pre-match brawl which shocked fans. Armagh received the same fine but Boylesports bookmaker, has offered to pay the sum on their behalf.
