Blacklion Martin Donegan"s keenly-awaited President"s Day took place on Saturday last. After a week of torrential rain, the greens staff did a magnificent job keeping the course in great shape, and blue skies and sunshine greeted all golfers throughout the day. However, scoring was proving difficult in the wind. Several golfers returned 40 points, with Tommy O"Connor"s effort good enough for a third place finish on count-back. In form Eugene Walsh thought it would be his day with a return of 42 points. However Captain Mel McLoughlin with 44 points was enough for a two point win. The highlight of his round was undoubtedly a chip-in eagle at the 8th, which allowed him to turn 2 under par gross. The gross prize was taken by Seamus Cullen with a two over par effort. A nice 39 points saw Brendan Cox return to form, and he collected the Past President"s prize, with Patsy Ferguson claiming Best Visitor. President"s Invitation to Ladies was won by consistent performer Bernie McHugh with Florrie Dundas in second place. In team news, the Conway Cup players completed their final against Omagh on Sunday.
