Colin makes world top twenty
THERE was further good news last weekend for Leitrim`s top athlete Colin Griffin (Ballinamore) when the IAAF Rankings for 2007 in the various events were announced.
Colin was among thirteen Irish athletes ranked in the Top Fifty in their events by the World Governing Body for athletics on foot of his outstanding 50K debut on 3:51.3 in Dudince in March where he set an Irish record and achieved Olympic qualification for Beijing. The Leitrim athlete was also one of seven Irish athletes who got into the World Top Twenty in Olympic events.
Getting ready for Road League
The Leitrim Road League will commence in Manorhamilton on Sunday January 20th with short races very suitable for new competitors. The League has been in operation since early 1974 and has been the means of introducing many to athletics down the years.
The events and age groups for 2008 are- Under 10 (born 1999 or later) 600m Girls, 800m Boys; Under 12 (born 1997 or later) 800m Girls, 1000m Boys; Under 14 (born 1995 or later) 1000m Girls, 1500m Boys; Under 16 (born 1993 or later) 2000m Boys; Under 17 (born 1992 or later) 1200m Girls; Under 18 (born 1991 or later) 3000 Boys; Ladies 1500m, Mens 5000m. There will be team and individual competitions with four to count up to Under 16 and three from there on. As many as wish can run. There will be a competition between schools run in conjunction with the inter club competition.
