Ulster Cup Final
The second leg of the prestigious Ulster Cup Final took place in Mannan Castle on this the last Sunday in August against a very determined Rossmore. Needing a performance of near Herculean proportions, Mannan Castle took to the battlefield with gritty determination. Team Captain Michael McBride gave his final Team Talk of this campaign and sent his "charges" into battle…. And what a battle it turned out to be! The game ebbed and flowed and the Match came down to the last game. Indeed the whole Final had come down to the last two holes of the last two players on the course. Ultimately Rossmore proved the stronger under immense pressure and it was all over; the last game went to Rossmore 2 & 1 and the Ulster Cup was destined to travel to the County Town for the first time. Congratulations Rossmore, but very well contested, to a very gutsy Mannan Castle performance.
Almost inconsolable were the Mannan Warriors, but fair play to them for travelling the "long and winding road" to the Final of the Ulster Cup 2008. Very well played Team Captain Michael McBride and his team of John Hughes, Seamus Finnegan, Club Captain Patrick Noel Brady, Eamon Gibney, Noel Gartlan, Derek Murnaghan and Stephen Emerson. Not forgetting Vice Captain Brendan McMahon, who playedin (and won) all matches up to the Final. A special note for Noel Gartlan who played "Ryder Cup" golf on Sunday and won his match 9 & 8, against a Rossmore man who hadn"t lost a game prior to the Final. Well done Noel.
The Carlingford Cup
The Semi-Final of the Carlingford Cup also took part in Mannan Castle on Sunday against Kilkeel. Well done to Team Captain Anthony Goff and his men who won through to the Final by 33 to 31. The format of this Competition is 4 Singles and 2 Foursomes. We look forward to another "day out" to watch another Mannan Team in another Final!
And finally, the Mannan Castle Howell Cup Team won a tough Semi-Final on Friday last, against Castleblayney by 11 ˝ to 4 ˝ . They now move into the Final against Rossmore. Could this be an early chance for a "bit of revenge" following on from the Ulster Cup defeat to the Rossmore Club..?!! Come on men, never mind about the holidays, weddings and business trips; knuckle down to bringing some silverware back to Mannan…..

Ladies
Last Monday was a very exciting day for the Ladies Club as we hosted the Ardee Millennium Cup. This is a friendly competition held between 12 clubs in the North East for Committee members started in 2000, hence the name of the competition. It is held in a different club every year, in alphabetical order and this year we had the honour of being hosts. It is a great day out for committee members to enjoy, a reward for all the hard work undertaken by committees in all the clubs. All but one club sent eight representatives to compete in this competition, eighty eight players in all so it was a very busy day in the Mannan. Our thanks must go to Rosemary Barry and Gill Rouiller and of course Captain Anne in particular who between them organised the event so well, and, with the help of many other members who gave willingly of their time, ensured that the whole day went off without a hitch. It was a shotgun start at 10 am and each team had to be at their posts before the hooter was sounded so that we would all return together to partake in the dinner at the same time. In spite of the rain the day was really good and the course played extremely well. The visiting teams were very complimentary of the course and facilities and really enjoyed their day. The winning team were from Black Bush and were absolutely delighted, their Captain Marie Doherty was thrilled to take home the cup as they had not won anything else this year. Congratulations to them. There is only one prize, however we are delighted to report that Team Mannan came third overall, a good result. The final of the Rhia Kenny competition was held in Hermitage also last Monday, and the category winners in the first round of the competition in Mannan were Gill Rouiller, Mary McNamee and Carol McMahon. Although not winners this year, they had a very enjoyable day away and are already looking forward to next year"s event. This week"s competition was V-Par and was won by Mary Cumiskey with +3, Kathleen Fox came second with +2 and Rosemary Barry came third with +1. Well done, ladies, a tricky competition to score in. Next week"s competition is an 18 hole stableford sponsored by Carrick Pharmacy.

Gary Sexton Winner
Much diligent preparation and organisation was obviously invested in Paul Fitzpatrick"s Captains Day, which passed smoothly on Saturday last. Everything had been covered from the precision parking of cars as competitors arrived to the heads of each competitor as they were presented with a commemorative cap. Players agreed the gazebo beside the 9th green was a much needed oasis where they could stop for burgers and other refreshments. Even the weather behaved itself and conditions were near perfect for most of the day. As the day unfolded it was clear that this year"s hot favourite and indeed the man where the smart money was, wouldn"t disappoint his backers and produced the goods with a stunning score of 63 nett. Captain Paul Fitzpatrick was delighted to welcome everybody to the evening celebrations and presentation of prizes and as they arrived they were greeted to a treat for the ears by The G-Strings who played rousing tow tapping music to get everyone in the mood for a great night"s craic. The prizes were beautifully displayed and the main prize of a Powakaddy and bag were much admired by the hopeful competitors. Captain Paul thanked those who had made a contribution to ensuring the day went well and handed over to Competition Secretary to announce the results which was done beauty pageant style, in reverse order to build the tension! Nearest the pin went to Mickey Dowds who was delighted with his prize which was timely for back to school! Longest drive went Sean McDermott. Frankie Dolan won the past Captains prize (70) and Pauric Smyth claimed the Committee prize with 69. The seniors" prize went to a very young Terry Lennon also with 69. Brendan McBrien had the best front 9 of the day (31) and Donald Egerton best back 9 (31 ˝). This year there was a stableford prize which was a stroke of genius, it meant that anyone who had a nightmare start could still be in for a prize and it would keep the mind focused. Well no one was more focused that Kevin Duffy who carded a brilliant 41 points. The Gross winner with a level par round of 71 was Patrick McCarville. Third was a man who has been practising relentlessly, to be seen on the course most evenings honing his skills and a deserving prize winner Niall Murphy with nett 67, in 2nd place also with nett 67 Paul McDermott. Then the moment we had all been waiting for the winner of Paul Fitzpatrick"s Captains Prize for 2008 with a fantastic score of 63 nett was Gary Section (17). Gary has only recently joined Clones and is very appreciative of the warm welcome he has received from the club. Well done to all the winners and thank you to Captain Paul for a brilliant day. The night continued with a beautiful buffet supper and music and dancing. Everyone agreed a great night was had by all.
August Monthly Medal
The result of the August Clarke Group sponsored monthly medal-first young gun Jack McCarron nett 64, 2nd Dominic Curran nett 66 and the gross went to Martin Carey with 81.

Ladies Club
Mary Trant Stableford
Winner
Last week"s stableford competition for the ladies was played in near perfect conditions with all the titivating being nearly completed to the course for the impending Captains Day; but the course was playing tough, after all the recent rain, with very little run on the ball. However the pins couldn"t have been in more favourable positions and the only player to capitalise on this was Mary Trant (16) who carded a modest score of 33 points winning Section A. Mary managed to score on every hole and although the front 9 consisted of 1 & 2 pointers the back 9 yielded a magnificent 20 points. Winner of Section B with 23 points was Kathleen 'my putter"s hot' Leonard (31). Well done ladies.
