THE FBD All-Ireland GAA golf challenge takes place at Faithlegg golf club on this (Saturday) 13th and Sunday 14th September, when Ulster will be represented by Cavan Gaels, who will be bidding to bring success to Cavan when they compete against five other teams from Waterford, Galway, Dublin, New York and Chicago, who each won their area finals.
Cavan Gaels were crowned Ulster champions after defeating Carrickmore from Tyrone by just one point. In the Ulster final, J. J. O"Reilly (12) and Brendan McClarey (18) notched up a respectable 43 points while Philip McMahon (9) and Gerry Bravender (13) chipped in with 39, on a day when weather conditions made the already testing course at Killymoon an even tougher prospect.
'The Ulster final was one of the most competitive and nail-biting rounds we have had in the competition to date' said competition organiser, Liam Daniels.
'Carrickmore had been in the club house for five hours before Cavan Gaels dashed their hopes.
Conditions were tough on the day and this could stand to Cavan Gaels at Faithlegg in the final.
We are all looking forward to next weekend.
It"s certainly going to be tight and I have no doubt were in store for two days of exciting golf'.
Emulate 2004 team
Cavan Gaels will be hoping to emulate the 2004 team who became All-Ireland champions. Last year"s All-Ireland winners, Waterford GFC in New York were pipped in the 2008 final by Roscommon GAA club across the water, while 2006 winners St Brigid"s of Dublin will be back to make amends for last year"s defeat.
Munster champions Lismore will also be in the running, with former Waterford goalkeeper Brendan Landers hoping to bring at least one All-Ireland trophy to the county, and Milltown of Galway completes the list of Irish finalists. Chicago will be represented at the golf challenge final for the very first time by Wolfe Tones GFC.
