Family affair at slieve russell golf club

History was made in the Slieve Russell Golf Club in Co Cavan last Saturday with Albert and Margaret Martin becoming the first husband and wife to be elected as Captain and Lady Captain of the Club in the same year. 

Joined by the Golf Club members, family and friends, Albert and Margaret hit the first shots of the official 2015 golf year at the popular Ballyconnell golf resort. The couple were joined by new Club President Cathal Brady. 

Speaking at the Drive-In, the newly elected Captain Albert, who is the owner of a popular Castleknock public house, said that he was “honoured to have been elected as captain of the Slieve Russell and that he looked forward to working with ‘the wife’ and the management of the Slieve Russell to grow the Club in 2015”.

Newly-elected Lady Captain Margaret said that she and Albert 'would uphold the values and traditions of the Slieve Russell Golf Club and would help to drive the club forward”.

She also promised to leave all talk of golf and golf club matters “firmly at the front door”.

General Manager of the Slieve Russell Golf Club Tony Walker said: “The appointment of a husband and wife was indeed historic and unique and that he and all the management and Staff at the resort looked forward to working with Albert, Margaret and Cathal during 2015.

“It is going to be a great year for the Slieve Russell, he added, “since the start of the year the club has seen a resurgence with nearly 40 new members coming on board which is down to the hard work of all involved with the club.”
