Cavan Gaels have been boosted by the news that well-regarded former Fermanagh and Sligo manager Dominic Corrigan has taken the managerial reins at the club.

Tyrone-based Kieran Donnelly was on board as manager but stepped down recently for personal reasons. Corrigan, from Kinawley, was at the helm for St Michael’s, Enniskillen during their MacRory successes and most recently was involved with Clontibret when they won the Monaghan SFC last year. He also previously won a Tyrone SFC as manager of Carrickmore.

“We were delighted to get Dominic, especially at this time of year when there are not many individuals available,” stated Cavan Gaels chairman Michael Mooney.

“We met with him and had a chat with him and we were really happy when he was willing to take over.”

The Cavan senior champions have endured a difficult start to the season, having lost four matches from six in Division 1A of the All-County Football League. Selectors Lorcan Martin, another Fermanagh native, and former Cavan footballer Cormac Nelligan will continue in those roles.

Corrigan applied for the position of Cavan senior team manager back in August 2008 but was overlooked in favour of Tommy Carr. In a 2003 interview with The Irish Times, Corrigan recalled how he had played for Swanlinbar in his youth, walking home to Kinawley afterwards.

He enjoyed a long career with the Erne men at senior level, scoring a goal against Cavan in the 1983 Ulster semi-final, and his sons Tomás and Ruairí currently play with Fermanagh.
