Cavan captain Gearoid McKiernan in action in last year's SFC against Ronan McNamee of Tyrone.

Cavan to face Monaghan or Fermanagh in Ulster SFC quarter final

The draw for next year’s Ulster Senior Football Championship was made last night and it has pitted Cavan in a quarter-final against either Monaghan or Fermanagh. Those two teams play each other in the preliminary round, writes Ultan Sherry.

Whoever comes out of that trio will be facing either Down or Armagh in an Ulster semi final later in June next year.

It promises to be an intriguing affair on many fronts.

For instance, new Cavan manager Mattie McGleenan has managed Monaghan club Scotstown for the last four seasons, and will therefore know the strengths and weaknesses of many of the Monaghan team through club football, should it be the Farneymen who prevail against the Ernemen.

As for Fermanagh, Cavan’s meetings with Pete McGrath’s men have never been civil.

On the other side of the draw, last year’s Ulster finalists, Donegal and Tyrone, could be on a collision course to meet in the other semi final.

In their respective quarter finals, the Ulster champions Tyrone will once again travel to Derry, and Donegal will have a home fixture against Antrim.
