After a tremendous first half, Cavan collapsed at Healy Park as Tyrone outscored them by 0-12 to 0-1 after the break to consign the Blues to their third defeat in four NFL matches.

Cavan, with the wind, were brilliant in the opening 35 minutes and a palmed goal from Gearoid McKiernan helped them into a 1-8 to 0-7 half-time. Three superb points from play by Martin Reilly allied to a brace from McKiernan (plus two frees) and one from Dara McVeety were the highlights as Cavan out-played Mickey Harte’s men.

However, Tyrone upped the ante after the break and while Cavan were still three points in front following a 42nd minute point from Conor Madden, they were held scoreless from there till the finish as Tyrone subs Mark Bradley and Ronan O’Neill landed 0-5 between them and the Red Hands ran out easy winners.

“At this level you have to string two halve together and we didn’t do that,” stated Cavan manager Mattie McGleenan, who rued his side’s “basic errors” in the second half.

Next up for Cavan is a daunting trip to Castlebar to face Mayo next Sunday.
