Cavan Town 2 Newtownforbes 1

An impressive Cavan Town moved into second place in the Combined Counties League Division Three table with a solid win over Longford side Newtownforbes in Tullacmongan last Saturday afternoon.

Town started the better team and had chances very early on with Brian Dolan and Brendan Smith shooting wide inside the first five minutes,

From the next attack, good work down the left drew the Newton defender into fouling John Heffernan and centre-half Michael smith almost opened the scoring from a dead ball, his effort smashing against the woodwork and rebounding to safety from 25 metres out.

Lifted by their close shave, Cavan pushed forward and on 15 minutes a short ball from defence to Finbar Donohue was played wide to Dolan laid off for Stan Mc Keown to bury a screamer to the net from just outside the penalty area, giving the keeper no chance for the keeper and deservedly nuding the home side into the lead.

Newtown had chances but Cavan keeper and captain Damian Smith was up to scratch in goals and frustrated the visitors with two point blank saves.

With half time approaching, Cavan looked to extend the lead and did so through Brendan Smith with great assistance from both strikers Dolan and Heffernan.

A great strike, again from distance, gave the keeper no chance and Cavan a half time lead of 2-0.

The second half started where the first left off and Cavan kept the pressure on the Newtown defence with Dolan twice coming close.

On the 75 minute mark, Newtown, who has begun to string some decent moves togather, opened their account with a well-taken goal.

Cavan, who had introduced Martin Doheny and Shane Byrne to tighten the defence, refused to panic and they showed how to kill a game off with excellent play from Vinnie Wimsey, holding possession and playing controlled passes short to the nearest man, slowly bringing the ball into Newtown"s half and going for the corner flag.

Packie Nevin kept the ball well and covered a lot of ground both in attack and defence and had a great game on a warm afternoon.

Overall Cavan Town could have won by a lot more but Newtown made sure they would not let them, so Cavan Town continue their campaign in style, having marked themselves out as sure contenders for the CCL Division Three title.
