Cavan Town's run continues
Cavan Town 7 Grant City 0
Cavan Town once again overcame a prominent Dublin side Grant FC to reach the quarter final of the Leinster Junior Shield and did so quite convincingly at Tullacmongan on Saturday afternoon.
Within five minutes Cavan Town had the Dublin lads on the back foot trying to figure out how they were going to control the pace and skill of Barney Morris on the right side of midfield.
It was his presence that created many chances for the town team and on nine minutes he was taken down and left Michael Smith the chance from dead ball to go one up and he gladly obliged with an unstoppable screamer to the top left corner to make it 1-0.
From the restart Cavan won possession and again Morris swung the ball in dangerously and striker Molloy was on hand to deflect the ball into the net and put Cavan 2-0 up after 15 minutes, a sign of things to come.
On the half hour mark the Grannit FC keeper gifted Cavan their third with a bad kick-out that fell to Philip Mullen who ran at the defence and slotted a great pass to Molloy, who grabbed his second and had Cavan smiling at half time. 3-0.
The second half saw Aaron Heffernan introduced for Molloy up front and his aerial power was just another weapon brought to use by the Cavan management team who deserve a lot of credit for this performance. Only two minutes in, Morris this time wanted his name on the score sheet and did so as he rounded two defenders and shot with power past the on coming keeper to make it 4-0.
Cavan withdrew Morris at this stage for the return of Finbar Donohue from injury and linked up with his usual midfield duo of Brendan Smith and Vinnie Wimsey, all three men carried the flag home for Cavan running the midfield, Wimsey was winning all the aerial ball and digging deep in tackles leaving Smith the chance to break forward with ball at feet and it was his turn to notch home Cavan"s fifth with a spectacular strike from distance.
Aaron Heffernan made it six on 60 minutes with a smart sliding finish from Stan McKeown"s ball across the box and McKeown made it seven 10 minutes later with great run from midfield to strike with pace again leaving the Grannit keeper picking the ball out of his net.
The big substitute Heffernan put the final nail in the coffin with his second and Cavan"s eighth, a great day for the Cavan Town side who at this stage have to be considered strong candidates for the Leinster Junior shield after defeating three prominent sides from the Dublin area. Man of the match yet again has to be Barney Morris, with Vinnie Wimsey coming a close second.
