Mannon Castle Ladies This week our annual Open Week was happening and despite the bad summer so far, the weather was great for golf - windy, showery and occasionally sunny, perfect challenging conditions, and a lot of people got stuck in for the wonderful prizes that were on show, thanks to the myriad of sponsors that sponsored our Open Week. The course is looking and playing particularly well, in spite of the greens being treated for some untimely appearance of infestation of some bug or other. However by midweek the problem was well under control thanks to the hard work of our grounds staff. Sunday, 13th July opened Open Week with a three person scramble and the only woman who featured in the prizes was Molly Mulvany, who along with her teammates, Tom White and David Doggett, captured third prize. Well done Molly. Sponsors were Barry and Niamh Fitzpatrick. On Monday in the Ladies and Gents Singles, Carmel Gray won with a wonderful 40 points; Category 1 was won by Gill Rouiller with 37; Category 2 - Angela McBride with 35 and Category 3 by Anne McArdle (Dundalk G.C.) 37. Sponsors were Togher Grasscare. Wednesday was the Ladies Singles and first was Vera O"Neill with a whopping 41 points; second Nuala Mulholland, also with 41 (beaten on the breakdown); third Bridie Fitzmaurice with 36 points. Front 9 won by Marie Bedford (Navan G.C.) with 24 points; back nine won by Philomena Rogers with 23 points. Friday was another Gents and Ladies singles, sponsored by Tavey"s Menswear and Monaghan Bottlers, and saw a reverse of fortune for Monday"s leaderboard when Gill Rouiller took the honours with 40 points and Carmel Gray came second with 39 points. Rita O"Loughlin, fresh from her weekend of marshalling at the Irish Ladies Open last weekend and no doubt picking up some useful tips, came third with 37 points. Indeed Gill was marshalling also and obviously benefitted with her great results this week. No doubt there will be lots of volunteers for next years event!! Mind you, I also marshalled but unfortunately I was more interested in the style than picking up tips and it showed in my golf this week as I unfortunately was not in the winners enclosure!! Congratulations to all the winners this week. Tomorrow, Monday sees the return match in the AA Foursomes, Captained by Jo Morris, at home against Sutton. Last week our ladies did really well to be two matches up, away, so here"s hoping that we can clinch this match and advance to the semi finals. Best of luck ladies, we are all rooting for you. This week"s competion is the NJ Haughey trophy, 18 hole stroke sponsored by Physical Therapy and the weather is looking good, so see you all out there. Finally, I would like to extend our congratulations to Padraig Harrington, winner of the British Open in Royal Birkdale. A fantastic achievement winning back to back like that. His golf was superb, an inspiration to us all. Roll on Ryder Cup.
