174 children killed on Cavan roads

A new report "Child Road User Casualties: 1997 - 2006" published by the Road Safety Authority has revealed that 174 children aged 14 years and under were killed or injured in Cavan over the ten year period, 1997 to 2006. The figures were released as parents and school children prepared for the start of a new school year. Advising parents Mr. Noel Brett, CEO, Road Safety Authority said: 'We are asking parents and guardians to consider including high visibility clothing, bicycle helmets and other life saving road safety gear on their "back to school" shopping lists and make sure their kids are street-wise about road safety before they go back to school'. Mr Brett also had a message for teachers. 'We would also ask teachers to consider including a road safety lesson from the RSA"s road safety resources in their classes.' Commenting on the findings of the report, he said: 'While the number of children being killed and injured on our roads has declined, tragically one child fatality is one too many.'
