Help out, and go out in Arva!
So you're not fit for the Breffni Challenge this Saturday? Never mind, the good news is that you can help the worthy cancer organisations by simply going out in Arva on Saturday or Sunday, day or night, and having a good time. On Saturday after the Breffni Challenge the Homecoming Party takes place in the Market Square with Eddie Quinn providing the entertainment. Paddy O'Brien and his band will perform at the Breffni Arms Hotel on Saturday night followed by a disco. During his career to date Paddy has enjoyed great success with previous albums and many songs have become the most popular ever recorded, including Out To California, Never Grow Old, Far Side Banks Of Jordan, Mum And Dad's Waltz and Many Mansions just to name but a few. His live performances are always a special event and his ability to reach out and captivate his audience always leaves them wanting more at the end of the show. His latest album, There Comes A Time, is Paddy's 25th to date and with songs such as Broken Souvenirs, He Stopped Loving Her Today, Just When I Needed You Most and Rock And Roll Yodelling Song it is sure to be another hit for the Waterford star. With his unique singing style, Paddy is described as one of Ireland's all time favourite ambassadors of country music. On Sunday the celebrations continue with a kids disco from 3.30-5.30pm in the Market Square. In the marquee that night, they have a great night of entertainment planned with showband legend Larry Cunningham and his band, Breege and Startrax and then a disco. Larry Cunningham was the star of The Mighty Avons showband from its inception until his departure in late 1969. When they became the Mighty Avons, the original lineup included: Larry Cunningham (vocals), Brian Finlay (drums), Ronnie Griffiths (keyboards/guitar), Gerry Walsh (bass), Mick Brady (guitar) and brothers Jimmy (trombone), Peter (sax) and Paddy (trumpet) Smith. Larry had previously been with the Grafton Showband from Gowna around 1960. All funds raised through the entertainment will go to the Breffni Challenge for cancer supporting St. Luke's Hospital in Dublin, NBCRI in Galway and Cavan Cancer Homecare Association. On for a great night out? Join the club! If you're looking for a new clubbing experience, look no further than the Lavey Inn, where a new over-18s night club is to be launched this Saturday night. However, to meet market demands, they're bringing back the over-18s club. The organisers note that as its been about eight years since they last ran a club, they look forward to a new generation of clubbers. They've invested in top-of-the-range lighting and sound systems. The night club is set to be launched this Saturday. Guest DJ will be Hazel Fleming from the i105-107 radio station favoured by many young listeners. Doors open at 11pm and dancing continues until 2am. And the recession-busting good news? To celebrate the launch, clubbers will be admitted free of charge before 12.30am this Saturday night. Lavey Set Dancers put best feet forward The newly formed Lavey Set Dancers got off to a winning start at the Ulster Fleadh in Castlewellan, when all three groups came away with medals, also meaning that the 20 or so dancers qualified for the All Ireland Fleadh. The dancers are drawn from Comhaltas Leamhaí (the Lavey branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann), which was formed just last year. The dancers are tutored by Laura Halpin, who was commended by Tom Fizsimons, chair of Comhaltas Leamhaí, for her dedication and long evenings of tutelage. Music for their winning steps was provided by Teresa Geoghan, Patrick Brady and Lavey's Patrick Tierney, a flautist and music teacher who works hard to keep the tradition alive. Patrick also entertained at the celebrations that evening in the Bent Elbow. "Great momentum is gathering for the upcoming Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann," commented Tom. "And we haven't far to travel for it!" New members are welcome in Comhaltas Leamhaí.
