Weather: Mainly dry day with some scattered showers

Overnight frost will clear to give a largely dry morning with some sunny spells - brightest further east, where it will stay largely dry today.

The latest weather forecast from Met Éireann says it will become cloudy or overcast as scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle slowly move in from the west, turning more persistent across Atlantic counties later today. Becoming breezy too, in a freshening southwest wind, which will be stronger along coasts. Highest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees Celsius.

Heavy outbreaks of rain will continue into tonight, bringing the risk of some river and localised flooding. Breezy at times, with moderate to fresh and gusty southwest winds. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 11 degrees Celsius, turning colder from the northwest towards morning.

Heavy spells of overnight rain will persist into Tuesday, bringing the ongoing risk of flooding. It will be wettest across the western half of the country in the morning. Low cloud and mist too. Brightening up from the west, but turning colder too. Highest afternoon temperatures will range 5 to 8 degrees Celsius. Southerly winds will be fresh and gusty at first, but will ease through the day.

The national outlook over the next few days is for a lot of dry and calm weather but turning very cold, with frost, fog and possible icy stretches.

It will become dry early in the night Tuesday, though some scattered showers will move into Atlantic counties overnight. Turning cold with frost and possibly a few icy stretches. Some mist and fog developing in parts too. Lowest temperatures 0 to 5 degrees Celsius, in light southwest to west breezes.

Frost and any possible icy stretches will clear early on Wednesday, to give a mostly dry day with long spells of autumn sunshine - just a few stray showers across the north and northwest. A cool and crisp day with highest temperatures of 7 to 9 degrees Celsius in just light westerly breezes. Very cold and frosty after dark with a widespread frost, along with mist and fog. Lowest temperatures of -3 to +2 degrees Celsius in near calm.

Thursday is giving for a mostly dry and calm day, but a cold day with variable cloud cover. Frost and fog may be slow to clear some areas. Highest temperatures of just 4 to 8 degrees Celsius. A few stray light showers about after dark, but overall dry and calm. Another cold and frosty night, with some dense fog in parts. Lowest temperatures of 0 to -3 degrees Celsius.

Looking ahead to Friday and frost and fog may persist in some areas. Once again though, most areas will see a dry calm day with a mix of cloud and sunny spells. Bitterly cold though with highest temperatures generally ranging just 3 to 6 degrees Celsius.

Current indications suggest that whilst temperatures will recover this weekend, it will however stay cooler than normal with some further frosts.
