Replacement of Cavan Town water mains complete

Irish Water acknowledged the inconvenience the major replacement works caused businesses in Cavan Town as the project is completed.

Almost 1,300 metres of old and damaged pipes on Main Street, Bridge Street, Town Hall Street, Thomas Ashe Street and Church Street were replaced. Decommissioning works also took place along Kinnypottle.

These works are expected to deliver benefits to local customers such as a more secure water supply and a reduction in leaks and bursts. The water quality in the network should also be improved by replacing old cast iron and lead pipes from the public water network with high density polyethylene (plastic) pipes.

The replacement works were carried out by Farran’s Construction Limited on behalf of Irish Water, working in partnership with Cavan County Council.

It was part of the National Leakage Reduction Programme. In 2018 the rate of leakage nationally was 46%, by the end of 2019 it was 42% and they are currently on course to achieve a national leakage rate of 38% by 2021.

Irish Water’s Leakage Reduction Programme Regional Lead Declan Cawley said: “The works involved the decommissioning and replacement of water mains in Cavan Town and include laying water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting them to the customer’s water supply. We carried out the works on a phased basis to minimise the disruption to businesses and the public.”

Declan added “I understand the inconvenience these necessary works may have caused and I would like to thank local residents and businesses for their cooperation during the works programme.”
