DPD to open new distribution centre in Cavan
The former Cavan and Monaghan depots combined were 5,000 ft² making the new depot treble the size of the former depots.
Parcel delivery service DPD Ireland will later today open a new 15,000 square foot distribution centre near Cootehill.
New depot, which aims to facilitate one million deliveries in Cavan and Monaghan during 2021, will be opened by Minister Heather Humphreys T.D.
“This welcomed investment demonstrates DPD Ireland’s strong commitment to County Cavan and indeed the wider border region. As a significant employer in Ireland, DPD Ireland had to quickly adapt following the onset of Covid-19 to ensure its customers were well served,” said Deputy Humphreys. “This announcement represents another vote of confidence in Cootehill and County Cavan and I want to commend DPD Ireland for their vision, ambition and success.”
DPD relocated its Cavan and Monaghan depots to a new 15,000ft² state-of-the-art distribution centre at Cootehill, Co Cavan, amid a huge uptick in demand caused by the pandemic.
The former Cavan and Monaghan depots combined were 5,000 ft² making the new depot treble the size of the former depots.
The two depots facilitated 450,000 deliveries in 2019, rising to 750,000 in 2020 due to the rise increased online shopping as a result of lockdown restrictions. With the majority of shops closed, and Level 5 restrictions continuing, Ireland’s largest parcel delivery company is forecasting one million deliveries this year in the Cavan/Monaghan areas.
The new larger facility will ensure the company can handle the increased parcel volume growth in the two counties.
DPD chief executive Des Travers said the company is continuing to navigate the Covid environment and manage the huge upsurge in demand.
“The new facility is part of ongoing investment in the company’s infrastructure, to meet demand caused by the pandemic, and help us continue to deliver a first-class service to businesses, online retailers and their customers,” he added.
The company invested €500,000 doubling the size of its depots in Cork, Kildare and Meath last year, and announced 800 new jobs in 2020 to facilitate the huge rise in online shopping caused by the pandemic.
Up to 150 positions were announced for DPD’s headquarters in Athlone, with another 650 roles for drivers and operational personnel based around 37 regional depots across the country. The new jobs bring the total number of people employed by the company to 2,000.
DPD averaged 730,000 parcel deliveries per week at the height of the Republic’s lockdown restrictions in May and June 2020, double what would usually be delivered.
DPD Ireland is part of the DPD Group, the second largest international parcel delivery network in Europe.
The group delivers 1.3 billion parcels to more than 230 countries each day.
