Funding for local women's domestic violence refuge

A dedicated women's domestic violence refuge is to be opened in Monaghan Town.

Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan, Niamh Smyth, has confirmed the funding for the facility following a meeting with Safe Ireland and the Department of Housing to discuss funding and the provision of a domestic violence refuge for the constituency.

Deputy Smyth was speaking after receiving an update regarding the location of a site for a women's refuge in Monaghan Town.

Deputy Smyth commented: "I have met with officials from the Department of Housing regarding what funding is available from them and what needs to be delivered for this project. I have been advised that money is available to fund this facility locally and I am working with all stakeholders to ensure this key project is delivered without delay as this has been a key priority of mine since elected to Dáil Éireann."

“Last week, Deputy Smyth also met with the CEO of Safe Ireland, Mary McDermott, to discuss the progress on delivering a women’s refuge for this constituency.

"It was a productive meeting where we outlined the key steps that must be taken before progress can be made on delivering this facility on the ground," said the Bailieborough-based TD.

Deputy Smyth continued: “Monaghan County Council are currently identifying a site for this facility. Tearmann Domestic Violence Services in Monaghan along with Safe Ireland are working towards providing for this service on the ground.

"While, I absolutely welcome this progress, I'm cognisant that domestic violence instances have significantly risen during the pandemic and the immediacy of the facility is far more urgent. I appreciate there are some services in the constituency, but these services are already stretched. We urgently require a 24hr refuge that offers safe and secure accommodation and support.

“The scourge of Domestic, Sexual and Gender Based Violence, and its trail of destruction must be tackled immediately with victims protected and supported. We must deliver a safe haven that will allow the women presenting at the refuge the time and space to recover and plan their future. The provision of necessary wrap around services especially for children are also essential in rebuilding their esteem and confidence from the trauma,” concluded Deputy Smyth.
