New gynaecology clinic for Cavan

A network of one-stop, see and treat gynaecology clinics are being set up across the country in an effort to improve access to services.

Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan & North Meath, Niamh Smyth, has received confirmation from her party colleague and Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly that one such clinic will be set up in Cavan.

Welcoming this news, Deputy Smyth said: "This will come from the significant €31 million in additional new development funding for women’s healthcare in 2022."

Approximately 70% of women referred to general gynaecology outpatients are appropriate for management and treatment in these clinics.

Deputy Smyth further explained: "This will mean local women won’t have to travel for basic appointments.

"Internationally, these clinics have shown they can reduce unnecessary hospital admissions and provide timely gynaecology care to patients. The clinics ‘one-stop’ visit provides a package of care consisting of assessment and treatment. Investigations available include pelvic ultrasound, diagnostic hysteroscopy and endometrial biopsy."

Some clinics are already operational in Cork, Galway, Dublin and Mayo.

"They are having a really positive impact on waiting times and I’m delighted now that Cavan has been added," concluded Deputy Smyth.
