CGH in 'Black Escalation' with high ED numbers

The message has been shared with all General Practitioners in the Cavan and Monaghan Hospital Region.

Management at Cavan General Hospital are advising all patients attending that they could face “significant delays” in treatment and also limited bed capacity following a high number of patient presentations to the Emergency Department.

Given the demand, the hospital, management inform, is in state of 'Black Escalation' at present. Black escalation status means the hospital is, according to HSE guidelines, in a “critical position and clinically unsafe”.

The message was shared with all General Practitioners in the Cavan and Monaghan Hospital Region.

Management adds that “any alternatives” to an Emergency Department referral that are available “should be explored as a priority”.

They add that correspondence will be issued to the public when the current level of escalation “reduces”.

A statement issued to media this morning, said: “Cavan General Hospital is currently experiencing significantly high levels of activity and is in Black Escalation. Please be advised that there are high numbers of patient presentations to the Emergency Department.

All patients should be advised of significant delays and limited bed capacity at present. If any alternatives to an Emergency Department referral are available these should be explored as a priority.

Correspondence will be issued when the current level of escalation reduces.”
