Flips, Fleas, and Fly by Nights for Culture Night

Culture Night experience celebrates the cultural, artistic, and creative communities of County Cavan

Everyone, everywhere, is invited to come together to discover and celebrate all that our culture is today in an exciting line-up this Culture Night.

This year Culture Night falls on Friday, September 23, and Cavan County Council Arts Office has curated a packed programme of events across the county.

The Culture Night experience celebrates the cultural, artistic, and creative communities of County Cavan by inviting existing and new audiences into arts, cultural and community spaces.

All activities are made available to the public free of charge, courtesy of the support of the Arts Council and Cavan County Council’s Arts Office.

Highlights include a performance of ‘Clarity on the Last Day’, written by Charlie McGuinness and performed by Killian McGuinness, takes place at Cootehill Library at 6:30pm. From 4-8.30pm, artist Jackie O’Neill will host the official launch of her new studio and gallery in Cavan Town with a variety of new works in progress and work from her archives on display.

Moth Studios, Church Street, Cavan town will host ‘Hedge School Ecologies’, a pop up installation showing work in progress by artist/researcher/curator/food fermenter, Niamh McDonnell from 4-9pm. The Fly by Night Mummers will perform songs, tunes, stories, tall tales and all kinds of merriment to entertain all those at nursing homes throughout Cavan Town who are unable to attend other Culture Night events.

Taking place from 7-9pm, ‘Boxty & Tunes’ is a celebration of the potato, the traditional Irish food, with a cookery demonstration and a trad session at Belturbet Library. Experience youth theatre culture; Gonzo style, at three fun and relaxed workshops with Gonzo Youth Theatre at 6pm, 7pm, and 8pm.

Flips and Fleas, incredible feats of human physical skill, sense defying silliness and some very opinionated puppets will take over the streets of Cavan Town, with five awe inspiring street theatre and circus shows to make your jaw drop and your eyes pop. Starring Cikada Circus, Currach Circus, Yer Man’s Puppets, and Mr. H and Pignut’s Dazzling and Spectacular Flea Circus, these all-ages shows will take place between 4-9pm.

Events are also taking place in Dowra, Milltown, Ballyjamesduff, Butlersbridge, Virginia, Shercock and Mullagh.
