COPPER Thefts occurred in Counties Cavan, Monaghan, Louth and Meath

Gardaí have arrested a man as part of an ongoing investigation into the theft of telephone cable.

The man arrested is in his 30s according to gardaí and is suspected of involvement in the theft of cable in Counties Cavan, Monaghan, Louth and Meath.

He is currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda station in the North Western Region.

A garda spokesperson said investigations are ongoing.

Earlier this year An Garda Síochána had put out a public appeal for information regarding 66 incidents of cable theft nationwide in the six month period from last Autumn through to February.

The vast majority of the thefts occurred in the Cavan / Monaghan, Louth and Meath Garda divisions.

Gardaí suspected the cables were being targeted for copper contained within the cable itself. The thefts resulted in significant loss to the affected telephone provider, Eir and also caused telephone and internet service outages.
