New Oncology Unit under consideration for Cavan

A new Oncology Day Unit is under consideration for Cavan General Hospital to assist in the treatment of cancer patients.

The HSE confirmed that the capital submission for the new unit at the local hospital facility was considered recently by the National Capital and Property Steering Group.

The HSE states this capital project will be considered for inclusion in the Capital Plan for 2023.

The news was confirmed yesterday (Tuesday) by Cavan/Monaghan Fianna Fáil TD Brendan Smith who deems the existing unit as “inadequate”.

He had tabled a number of parliamentary questions in Dáil Éireann highlighting the need to progress the project and raised the issue with the Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly.

Deputy Smith emphasised “the great value and importance of these cancer services for large numbers of patients in Cavan/Monaghan and neighbouring areas and the resultant pressure on staff who work extremely hard in outdated accommodation”.

The announcement comes as tenders for a major extension project at Cavan Hospital were published in July of this year with planning permission granted in May.

The 5236 sq m extension will include a new Emergency Department (ED), Endoscopy Unit (EU) and 16-bed ward.
