Progress in tackling vacancy hailed

Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, Cllr John Paul Feeley, has hailed the efforts of Cavan County Council in tackling vacancy in the county.

Since 2018, Cavan County Council has returned 283 vacant housing units to productive use through a major improvement works programme carried out by local contractors, with co-funding of €2.708M provided by the Department of Housing.

This has seen a significant reduction in vacancy levels with a further programme of works to continue this year.

Cathaoirleach Cllr Feeley visited two properties in Cavan Town this week; one completed property at Highfield Road and one house where works are underway at Jubilee Terrace; to observe the efforts being made to bring more homes back into use.

“I am pleased to see Cavan County Council make significant progress in tackling vacancy in County Cavan. Vacant homes not only represent an eyesore in our towns and villages, but they represent a tragic waste of resources at a time when the need for housing has never been greater,” said Cllr Feeley.

“It’s particularly pleasing that so many local contractors are involved in carrying out this work, with 11 local firms currently engaged in refurbishment work on behalf of Cavan County Council, helping to support local jobs and the local economy.”
