Gardaí confirm latest road fatality

Third death in nine days on Cavan roads, two in 24 hours

Gardaí are currently at the scene of a fatal road traffic collision involving a car and a parked truck.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:30am ( Friday, May 5) on the R178 at Carrickgorman, Bailieborough.

The driver and sole occupant of the car involved, a male iaged n his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The body has since been removed to Cavan General Hospital where a post-mortem examination will be conducted at a later date.

The R178 at Carrickgorman, Bailieborough is currently closed with local diversions in place.

An examination by Forensic Collision Investigators is currently underway.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the R178 at Carrickgorman, Bailieborough between 11am and 12pm are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

Yesterday (Thursday, May 4) 26 year old Colm Tully from Mullaghboy, Cootehill died when his car was involved in a collision with a lorry on the N3 at New Inns, Ballyjamesduff.

It is the third road fatality on Cavan's roads in the past nine days, and the second to occur in the last 24 hours.

All incidents are being investigated by gardaí attached to the Bailieborough District.
