Thank you to all the sponsors and participants and to the effort by the Team. Hot on his heels was Seamus Falconer with 41 points, while Gerry O"Brien was a shot further back in third. Noel Melanaphy and Teddy Henderson did battle for the coveted Kinawley Cup at the weekend, and Noel must have thought he had done enough to win when finding himself two up with two to play. However, a fine par on the last hole ensured Teddy would live to fight another day. Cabra Castle Week ending 11/10/08, Winner: Sean Martin, 2nd Kevin Carry. Clones Golf Club Monthly Medal Gentlemen, the final Clarke Group Sponsored Monthly Medal will be contested this weekend Saturday 18th October and Sunday 19th October. Alpha Bet The letters drawn in last week"s Alpha Bet lotto were ABMX but there were no winners of the 5,800 Jackpot which will now roll over to 5,900. The 5 lucky dippers, each winning 20 were Bernie Toal C/O Bennies Bar, Patrick McCarville Clones, Geraldine McMahon Lisnaskea, Mary Maguire Clonmackin and R. Cassidy Locklevra. Congratulations to them! Next draw on Monday evening so ask yourself do your letters look lucky?? Captains" Dinner Dance A date for your diaries! Mixed Foursomes Climax The climax of this year"s mixed foursomes matchplay competition is now upon us and with Mickey Dowds and Marie Douglas set to play Patricia Brady and Mike Keane in one half of the semi-final and Pat & Rosita McCabe playing Michael Connolly and Vera Tighe in the other semi-final, it will surely be an exciting final in prospect. Congratulations to these four couples who have battled their way through several rounds to get to this stage, no mean feat. Matthews Weekend Matthews Weekend was a huge success, the course was in fine shape, the weather was fantastic and the competition attracted a big field of competitors. Thank you to Genie & Mary McCaughey of Matthews of Clones for their generous sponsorship. Results next week! Ladies Winter League The first week of the ladies winter league 'Teams for Xmas Hampers' was well supported and Mary Trant"s team 'The Cannibals' (the last confession of Alexander Pearce, was too long a name so we plumped for his nick name 'the Clones Cannibal' instead!). Anyway Mary"s team are leading at this early stage with 5 points. Well done to Lyn Whelan 17 points and Mary Trant 16 points. The team in 2nd place earning 2 points, are Team 1 captained by Vera Tighe and it was Vera herself who had 15 points along with 17 points from Celesta McKiernan well done ladies. In joint 3rd place each claiming 1 point were teams 4 & 5 Team 4 captained by Una O"Reilly who had 14 points and team mate Rosita McCabe with 16 points. Catherine Farrell (team 5) relied on her team members to card the point earning scores, that"s the sign of a good Captain, well delegated Catherine! and congratulations go to Doli Maguire with 15 points and Helen Connolly also with 15 points. A great start ladies BUT team 6 only had 1 of their ladies play in week one, come on, your team needs you! Team Captains please get names for your teams as soon as possible. And Finally......... Another reminder ladies, our party night will be on Friday 21st November and the medals, GOY, birdie tree and par pyramid will be presented on that night together with the matchplay trophies. All ladies are welcome especially all our new members. Also on Sunday 23rd November (the hangovers should be cleared by then!) at 3pm it"s the ladies club AGM and again all ladies are invited to attend. If you have any matters for the agenda or proposals please contact Ann McCarthy Hon. Sec. Mannan Castle Ladies Last week the competition was the twelve hole repeater for the National Breast Cancer Research Institute and a large number of ladies played more than once. The overall winner with a huge score of 29 points was Nuala Mulholland; second was Angela Gartlan with a score of 26 points just beating Rita O"Loughlin on the breakdown into third place. Great scores ladies, and now that the Winter League is up and running, a target for all of us to aspire to. The winter league teams have now been drawn and posted, and very interesting reading they make. There is a great spread of handicaps between the teams, so start playing and get your scores in ladies. I predict that this year"s league will be very competitive and a close run thing. There are ten teams of five players, three scores to count each week and there will be prizes for the first four teams. It is great to see so many ladies have entered the league this year, it just proves how our club is going from strength to strength. The rules of the league are posted in the clubhouse, so check these out next time you are going out to play. As the club open is continuing to run throughout the winter, we are unable to play our repeater on Thursdays. The league will run over eight weeks, and to be eligible to win a prize, you must play at least four out of the eight weeks. The prize giving will be held as usual on Kinder Day which will be on 10th December.....giving us plenty of time to get ready for Christmas! There are also turkey vouchers to be won, and for those of you who want to play and are not in the league, you have a chance to win one of these. So happy golfing ladies, no excuses now that we are down to the twelve holes. Mens Mannan Castle Golf Club Donaghmoyne, Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan. Howell Cup Final Success for Mannan Castle! Mannan Castle 16 ½ : Rossmore 15 ½ On Saturday afternoon Mannan Castle hosted Rossmore in the return leg of the Cavan-Monaghan Alliance, Howell Cup Final. Trailing 7 points to 9 from the 1st leg in Rossmore, it was "shoulders to the wheel" for the Mannan Team at 2.15pm. They had it all to do and there was also the race to complete the four matches before darkness fell… Four very close matches after 9 holes saw Mannan take a 1 point lead into the back 9. This proved to be just as tight with neither team getting more than a hole up in any of the matches. As darkness began to descend and with the aid of Jimmy McMahon "listening" for the balls to drop on the fairways, it was going down to the last match and even deeper darkness!! With the aid of a strategically placed car, headlamps illuminating the 18th fairway, a posse of golfers emerged from the gloom to reveal Mannan had triumphed on the 17th and the Howell Cup was won!! Congratulations to the Mannan Castle Team of: John Simpson, Ollie Kellet, Tommy Hoey, Jimmy Courtney, Gerard Daly, Jimmy McCahey, John Lane, Michael McGettigan, Frank Cumiskey, Jim Hanratty and Team Captain Peter Marquis. "Thank you" to Rossmore for such a sporting match played in the true spirit of the game. They were very ably led by Team Captain Jimmy McKenna and his team of: John McKenna, Declan Murphy, Brendan Connolly, Paul McQuaid, Noel O"Mahoney, the irrepressible Malachy Deery, Mattie Watters and Jim Fanning.
