"You cannot keep screwing producers," insisted an Irish MEP as she warned that the failure to regulate the food supply chain could be as disastrous as the failure to oversee the financial markets. Ireland East MEP, Mairead McGuinness gave her blunt assessment to approximately 500 farmers packed into the Errigal House in Cootehill, where she was the special guest for Thursday's Cavan/Monaghan IFA executive meeting. Figures provided by the European Commission show that farmers across the food sector in Ireland received on average just 24% of the price paid by the consumer.
