The late Brian Og Maguire.

Sadness following tragic death of man at Quinn factory

The border region was in shock yesterday and is coming to terms with a tragic loss of life, with Fermanagh GAA player Brian Og Maguire named as the young man who died following an industrial accident at Quinn's Pre Stress Plant between Ballyconnell and Derrylin. The accident happened shortly after 10am on Thursday morning, and Maguire, who captained his team, Lisnaskea Emmetts, to victory in the All-Ireland Intermediate Football Championship in 2011, and is understood to have died while on his way to hospital. Maguire (24) was also part of the Fermanagh senior football squad for the last three to four years, and he played in the half-forward line in the Ulster SFC quarter-final defeat by Down at Brewster Park in June earlier this year. A spokesperson for the Quinn Group confirmed that a member of staff was fatally injured at their pre-stress plant in Derrylin. An investigation into the cause of the accident has commenced. The PSNI commented that the Health and Safety Executive have been informed of the incident and are now leading the investigation. A Fermanagh GAA statement said the county committee, senior football management and players were: "Shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden death of our county senior player and teammate Brian Og Maguire due to an accident at his work. "We extend our sympathy to Brian Og's parents Brian and Eileen, sisters Roisin and Eimear, his entire family circle and the members of his club Lisnaskea Emmetts at this most difficult time. "Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this sad time."
