Cavan designed canopy to cut heating costs
A new electric heating system for weaner pigs designed by a Cavan designer could substantially reduce energy costs for farmers in the pork sector. The Ultimat electric heat canopy was designed by Cavan businessman Damien Donohoe in order to help reduce costs by focusing heat in specific areas. Young pigs require temperatures of around 28-29oC in order to thrive in standard intensive farms. Pork farmers have until now typically heated the entire pen at a significant cost. However the electric canopy provides the required temperature in the sleeping quarters of the pen, leaving the remainder of the pen at a comfortable temperature. Two separate thermostats control the temperatures of the distinct zones in the pen, and the canopies can be raised to lie flat against the wall when not required. See this week's Celt for more...
