McDwyer retires from Town Council
Monday"s meeting of Cavan Town Council was the last meeting of the outgoing council before the local elections. Tributes were paid to elected members and the executive, particularly Mayor Paddy O"Reilly, who is seeking re-election and Cllr. Eamon McDwyer, who is retiring from public life after 30 years. All elected members - Cllrs. Paddy Conaty, Patricia Walsh, Paddy Sexton, Brian McKeown, Des Cullen, Andrew Boylan, Terry Argue and Paddy O"Reilly - wished the Fianna Fail councillor well in his retirement. 'Eamon has served the council very well for the last 30 years. That"s some dedication and commitment to the people of Cavan,' said Cllr. Walsh and others echoed the sentiment. Cllr. McDwyer said his retirement is 'more related to health issues than lack of interest' and he was sorry to leave. Wishing his fellow councillors well in the forthcoming elections, he said: 'I don"t think there"s any price that could be put on the work done by councillors... When you knock on doors, the public should not attack but congratulate you.' He spoke also of the progression and change in Cavan Town, since he arrived here in 1970. Town Manager and Clerk, Frank Gibbons and Brian Hora, joined in the glowing tributes.
