Clogher House to get new Day Service facility

The HSE have signalled their intention to provide the Cavan Monaghan Disability Services with a new day service facility to replace the existing Clogher House in Rathcorrick, Cavan.

At present Clogher House Day Activation Unit accommodates 35 service users accessing a Monday to Friday service. It supports a range of levels of disability from moderate to severe to profound Intellectual Disability, for persons over the age of 18 years. The age profile of the current service users accessing the service ranges from 23 to 67 years.
The centre caters for a range of dependency levels. Some clients have complex medical and physical needs, but with support they are enabled to meet their full potential. The service also has a dedicated Special Care Unit. Access to the multidisciplinary services is provided through the activation unit, which provides clinical nurse specialist, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech and language therapy.

Cavan Monaghan Disability Services are actively progressing a new day service provision with the new build. The HSE said: “As this is in the early stages of development further information relating to the site/ location cannot be identified at this time.”

Nine nominated personnel within the two counties Disability Services have been identified to assist in planning the new service development.

The steering group will implement the next stages of the process within the next month. Cavan Monaghan Disability Services say the new service facility will meet the criterion that guides Day Service standards.

Fianna Fáil TD Brendan Smith welcomed the plans to upgrade the existing service, commenting that at present the accommodation at the Clogher House Centre is “inadequate”.

The build will comply with the New Directions guides governing such facilities. The ethos of New Directions is to establish links with the community. The HSE say that the Cavan Monaghan Disability Services will continue to actively implement and develop this philosophy.

In a statement the HSE said: “The service is focused and fully committed on the decommissioning of the current Day Service provision in Clogher House Rathcorrick to ensure that suitable accommodation will be provided to meet the needs of all current Service Users and future referrals within Cavan and surrounding catchment areas.

Deputy Smith said that it is essential that proper accommodation is provided for present and future users of this service.
