Four lose lives on Cavan roads in 2018

The number of people to have lost their lives on the county's roads increased in 2018.

Provisional figures show a total of four people were killed as a result of fatal road traffic collisions in the past 12 months, compared to just three each in 2017 and 2016.
The increase, registered at time of going to print, bucks the trend nationally where most other counties have registered a fall in the number of road deaths.
To date in 2018, 145 have been killed on the roads nationally, down from 158 in 2017.
Combined with Co Monaghan, the Cavan Monaghan Garda division saw 11 people lose their lives in 2017, up from eight in 2016.
The most recent death locally involved the well-known and highly respected GAA representative Tony Mc Cann of Kilsob, Bawnboy, who died December 10 from injuries sustained in an accident near his home almost a week earlier.
In Monaghan, meanwhile, father-of-two Stephen Marron (47) died at Main Street, Castleblayney on November 28 last, when the car he was sitting in was hit by a silver Audi A6 driven by James Tomany (34).
Mr Tomany of Clay Road, Keady, Co Armagh, remains in custody having been charged with dangerous driving causing the death of the delivery driver.
Other fatal road traffic collision registered and investigated by gardaí in the past year include that of Deividas 'David' Lekerauskas (18) of Cabra View, Kingscourt.
Described as “lovely, bright, and intelligent” by his peers, he was the driver of a car involved in a two vehicle collision on the Dublin Road, Kingscourt, in the early hours of Saturday morning, April 28.
Elsewhere, an Armagh-native aged in his 40s was killed when his car collided with an articulated truck on the N3 at Bunn, Belturbet on March 9; and in early February, a male in his 70s died following a single car collision at Lakeview, Castleblayney.
Among the fatal road traffic collisions to have occurred in the region in 2018, two involved pedestrians.
They include Eileen Meegan of Killabola, Inniskeen, fatally injured in a collision involving a truck at Main Steet, Carrickmacross, on September 27; and 60-year-old Brendan Heery or ‘Flatley’ as he was known locally, killed following a fatal collision with a van at Greagharue on the Bailieborough to Kells road.
Nationally, it has been stated the aim is to reduce the number of road fatalities on Irish roads to 124 or fewer by 2020.
