Magic in the night sky

One of the difficulties in Ireland with the observation of astronomical events is cloud cover. Meteor showers, planet parades and eclipses are often hid behind a bank of clouds.

Not so Monday night when early risers had clear skies to observe the super blood moon. This unusual lunar eclipse which peaked between 4.41am and 5.43am Irish time.

One Cavan resident who left the comfort of her duvet to see this remarkable phenomenon was Carrickfern's Mary Leonard: “I stayed up for three hours in the late hours of the Monday morning to see this moon and I captured these three beautiful pictures. I took them on my good camera,” Mary told the Celt.

Captioned “Moon gazing in the early hours of the morning” Mary's snaps capture the various stages the moon went through on the night.

The super blood moon occurred when the moon passed through Earth's shadow in a total lunar eclipse during the Full Wolf Moon, which is also a super moon.
