Funding boost for Cavan Sports Campus

Almost €840,000 has been jointly allocated to Cavan County Council and the Cavan County GAA Board towards a new state-of-the-art sports campus facility for the county town.
It is one of seven major sports projects nationally to be granted funding under the new Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF).
The funding of €837,680 for Cavan was announced by Sports Minister Shane Ross in the last half hour.
The overall estimated cost to deliver the Breffni project is cited at almost €28.3M.
Commenting on the announcement Minister Ross said: “We were delighted to announce significant funding for major sports facilities in recent days. It is well established that participation in sport plays a significant role in improving people’s health and wellbeing. It is particularly important to get our young people involved in sports and to do so, we must have good quality, safe and attractive sports facilities. The grants we are announcing today in addition to the 25 grants announced on Friday last, will help deliver state-of the –art facilities across the country and across a variety of sports.”

The proposed sports campus, which has been liked to the Peace Link facility in Clones, was one of 72 projects being considered by the Department for funding.
The Cavan multi-sports facility will include a 4G pitch for Gaelic football, soccer and rugby, basketball and hockey, and facilities for badminton, tennis, and athletics.
A feasibility study, concluded back in February, identified three suitable sites in and around Cavan Town and its environs.
Under the local authority's own plans to spend €115 million over the next three years, funding of €450,000 has been ring-fenced to progress the sports campus plan through its initial phases, 2019-2020.
