Man dies in Cavan fire

A man has died and several others hospitalised following a blaze at an apartment in Cavan Town tonight.

Among those taken for medical treatment was a child and two members of the local fire service called to attend the scene. Their injuries are not believed to be serious, a spokesperson for An Garda Siochana informed The Anglo-Celt.

Its understood one of the members of the fire service was treated for smoke inhalation.

A spokesperson for Cavan County Council issued a statement notifying that the two firefighters were taken to Cavan General Hospital for treatment and are "currently being retained for observation".

Emergency Services were first alerted to deal with the incident between 8-9pm tonight, Saturday, January 25.

Units from Cavan Town and nearby Belturbet station attended the scene, while members of An Garda Siochana  secured the area with traffic diversions put in place.

Persons in properties neighbouring the burning apartment were also evacuated, and the area cleared.

Road closures remain in place tonight, with diversions restricting traffic from the top of Main Street down as far as Connolly Street.

A forensic analysis of the scene is not expected to take place until tomorrow morning (Sunday). The apartment and area around where the fire occurred have been sealed off.

It is understood also that gardai have attempted to stop persons from taking photographs or videos from around the cordoned off area.
