It was a busy Friday evening of club action.

ROUND-UP: Upsets on busy championship evening

Paul Fitzpatrick

Week two of the club football championships got underway tonight with five matches at various venues across the county.

In the first of the Intermediate Championship matches, Arva put some patchy league form in Division 1 behind them when they ran out convincing 19-point winners over Division 3 Drumgoon, 5-16 to 1-9, with Brían Ellis bagging four goals.

Meanwhile, in Mullahoran, Swanlinbar’s season-long habit of leaking goals reared its head again as they slipped to a heavy defeat against an impressive Redhills side.

Turloc Mooney, Packie Leddy and Cormac Brides all stood out for the winners, with Sean Martin bagging 1-2 in the first half on his championship debut and Martin Walsh coming off the bench to kick 0-3.

County star Gearoid McKiernan raised seven white flags (four frees) but it wasn’t enough as Swad, minus key man Chris Curran, were well beaten.

In Ballyjamesduff, Mountnugent turned in scintillating attacking performance to get the better of neighbours Munterconnaught by 4-13 to 2-13.

Adam Rehill kicked 1-4 in the first half, with the reliable Liam Hennessy landing 1-6 (46) in total, the goal coming in the dying seconds from a 40-metre shot that dropped short.

Mountnugent led by 2-10 to 0-5 at half-time, with injury-hit Munterconnaught – for whom John McCabe landed an eyecatching 0-12 (11f) – running in late consolation goals from Sean Nolan and Craig Daly.

Elsewhere, Drumlane made it two wins from two with a 1-12 to 1-10 win over Shannon Gaels in Corlough, with Drumalee bouncing back from last week’s loss to Templeport to consign Kildallan to a second defeat on a 1-16 to 0-14 scoreline.
