Excitement is building ahead of the fifth annual Anglo-Celt Sports Awards at the Cavan Crystal Hotel on February 8 - and now you have the chance to have your say with our Readers' Choice award. The Readers’ Choice award is chosen from the 12 monthly winners and is an opportunity for our readers and members of the public to make their voices heard! The winner of the Readers’ Choice award will receive a year’s membership to Zest Health and Fitness Club at the Cavan Crystal Hotel. Voting for the Readers’ Choice award is now open and will run right through to midnight on February 6th. All the details can be found below so get voting!

 

January – Leanne Kiernan (soccer)


Leanne Kiernan, who later signed for West Ham, had another brilliant year in 2018 and she got the ball rolling when scoring for the Republic of Ireland’s senior women’s team in a 3-1 win against Portugal.

February – Paddy Gumley (football)

Redhills native Gumley has won junior and intermediate medals with his home club but since moving to Cork, his achievements have gone to another level. In February, he was a key member of the Nemo Rangers team which reached the All-Ireland club SFC final.

March – Oisin Kiernan (rugby)

Ballymachugh rugby star Oisin played at second row in the Ulster Schools Cup final as his team, Campbell College from Belfast, defeated Armagh Royal School in the provincial final at Ravenhill.

April – Niamh Keenaghan/Muireann Cusack/Elaine Brady (ladies football)

April was an extraordinary month in Loreto College, with the school winning both the U20 and U16 All-Ireland A titles. The teams were captained by Niamh Keenaghan, Muireann Cusack and Elaine Brady.

May – Kaci Crowley (boxing)

Crossdoney boxer Crowley won gold at the European Schoolgirls Championships in Albena, Bulgaria in May. Competing for Ireland in her first major international competition, she scored conclusive victories over Romanian, Italian and Russian opponents

June – Cavan U14 ladies (football)

Ladies football continues to go from strength to strength in Cavan and the U14 girls delivered an amazing success story in June when they won the All-Ireland title, defeating the might of Dublin in the final.

July – Oisin McCorry (athletics)

Young 400m hurdler Oisin McCorry picked up three national medals over the course of 2018, two in June (All-Ireland Senior Schools bronze and U20 National Championships bronze) and, in mid-July, a silver in the U19 National Championships.

August – Leo Doyle (cycling)

Butlersbridge rider Leo Doyle took a hugely-impressive victory in a UCIranked junior road race in Belgium in August. Doyle, who rides for DB Cycling Club, was best of an 80-strong international field in Balegem in the 100km race.

September – Claragh O’Reilly, Eimear Gilsenan, Evelyn Baugh and Niamh Daly

 

To win one county senior medal is something special but to win seven is extraordinary. That was the feat completed by O’Reilly, Gilsenan, Baugh and Daly in September.

October – Ronan Flanagan (football)

Castlerahan’s odyssey towards a county senior title was years in the making and, in October, they finally achieved their goal. Their captain and one of their leading lights was the long-serving Ronan Flanagan.

November – Conor Deery (Taekwondo)

Cootehill star Conor, a top-ranked international in his discipline, continued his meteoric progress in Taekwondo when he won the TNT Open in the Netherlands and, on his return home, the 68kg Irish national title.

December – Mickey Graham (football)

Last but not least was Cavan Gaels clubman Graham, who managed Mullinalaghta to success in the Leinster Club SFC final against Dublin giants Kilmacud Crokes. The victory was the talk of the nation.
