Critical after Cavan Stabbing

A man, who allegedly stabbed his girlfriend 18 times in Co. Cavan on Tuesday, was remanded in custody yesterday (Wednesday). Noel O'Reilly, unemployed and in his 30s, with an address in Kilnaleck Village allegedly stabbed the mother of his infant baby girl 18 times during a domestic argument at 5 Fairgreen, Kilnaleck Village, Co Cavan. The domestic incident occurred just before 1pm on Tuesday. Gardai were called to the house and the woman was immediately rushed to Cavan General Hospital where she was operated on. A hospital spokesperson said yesterday that the victim's condition remains 'critical'. Before Judge Sean McBride at Monaghan District Court yesterday, O'Reilly was charged with assault causing serious harm and with false imprisonment of his partner. The defendant replied "No reply" to both charges. He was defended by solicitor, Mr. John Quigley, who did not make an application for bail. Judge McBride said that O'Reilly was before the court charged with very serious offences. He remanded the defendant to the September 9 sitting of Cloverhill District Court in Dublin. Judge McBride also directed that the defendant urgently receive a psychiatric examination following an application by the defendant's solicitor.
