Business must offer value for money during Fleadh

The arrival of some 290,000 people in Cavan town for the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil is a major boost for the county. Research by economic consultants has already shown that almost €35m was generated for the Cavan town economy as a result of Fleadh 2010. Bearing in mind that almost a quarter of that total spend was on food and drink, those in the hospitality industry got a major windfall. And they are certain to benefit, perhaps even more this year, as the fleadh will be staged over 10 days for the first time. There truly is an opportunity not to be missed here. In one of the worst economic recessions in living memory with businesses closing down, going into receivership or people losing their jobs, Cavan has been given a gift. In the lifetime of Fáilte Ireland and before that Bord Fáilte, never has there been such an opportunity to market and showcase Cavan to such a massive national, and indeed international audience. Fleadh 2010, 2011 and (fingers crossed) 2012 stand to do more for tourism in County Cavan than anything that has gone before. We have the punters in our grasp for up to 10 days, we need to sell ourselves to them. Yes there is plenty to do and see in Cavan and that is being communicated. But it is down to the private sector - those in the hospitality industry, the retail sector and tourism industries - to deliver real value for money and excellent service. It would be a shame if a few were to drive in the arms as far as prices are concerned. Any visitors who have a positive experience as far as money and hospitality goes, are far more likely to return or indeed likely to recommend Cavan to family and friends as a place to visit. For years, Cavan has been lagging behind counties like Donegal and Sligo in the northwest when it comes to attracting holidaymakers from home and abroad. Indeed, the latest year for which detailed figures are available from Fáilte Ireland showed that just 72,000 visitors came to County Cavan in 2009, generating revenue of €30m. This is a reduction on the 92,000 visitors that came in 2008 spending €43.5m. How telling is it that the fleadh in Cavan town generated more in one week last year, than was generated from overseas visitors in the entire county for all of 2009? This demonstrates the point that there is an opportunity here not to be blown. Businesses should not be blinded by euro signs and look to the bigger picture for the long-term. Here's a very real opportunity. Let's grab it with both hands. Everyone in Co Cavan can play their part by taking pride in their county and making all visitors for Fleadh 2011 feel welcome.
