U21s retain title as Andrews heads for exit

To say that yesterday (Wednesday) was an eventful one for Cavan football would be the understatement of the season. Early in the evening, word leaked out that Val Andrews appears to be headed for the exit door after the senior panel voted that they didn't wish to see him remain in charge. That news was over-shadowed, however, by a magnificent performance by the county U21 side in defeating Tyrone in the Ulster final for the second season in succession. A penalty in the first minute from wing-back Darragh Sexton set Cavan up for a 1-11 to 0-11 win, with Killian Clarke, Jason McLoughlin and Kevin Tierney outstanding. In a fantastic speech, captain Barry Reilly paid tribute to the supporters ("our 16th man") and manager Terry Hyland. He also called on team-mates Conor Moynagh and Michael Brady to receive the cup with him. There could be trouble brewing in Cavanonce again after representatives of the county senior football panelcontacted the county chairman to outline a number of issues. It is understood that, immediately after Cavan's fifth defeat from seven matches at home to Antrim last Sunday, the players asked the board to make arrangements for a room in which they could hold a private meeting on Tuesday night. Following their meeting in the Ramor United clubrooms at Virginia, a players' representative contacted chairman Tom Reilly to request a meeting with the board at which the players will outline "a number of issues". The BBC, meanwhile, have since reported that 33 of the 36 players present at the meeting voted for Andrews' removal as manager. U21 bainisteoir and senior selector Hyland, however, gave nothing away when interviewed by the Celt after the final (see video).
