Dreadnoughts tear up the script

Mullahoran 1-8 Kingscourt Stars 0-7 Paul Fitzpatrick at Kingspan Breffni Park A 59th minute goal from Philip Brady helped Mullahoran tear up the script in the Cavan SFC final last Sunday in Breffni Park against hot favourites Kingscourt before a bumper crowd of 6,563. The Dreadnoughts were the better side early on and led by 0-3 to 0-0 after scores from Ray Lynch, Enda O'Reilly (two) but the Stars soon took charge. Points from Colm Smith, county minor Padraig Faulkner and two from Cavan U21 captain Barry Reilly saw them level at the break and moving ominously well. However, the Dreadnoughts hung tough and, having been two down, rounded off the scoring with an unanswered 1-3 in the final ten minutes, with Eddie O'Reilly and Enda O'Reilly (two) pointing before Brady smashed home his goal from close range to seal a first county title since 2006. Mullahoran captain Dermot Sheridan received the Oliver Plunkett Cup amid jubiliant scenes, as Paul Brady - who hopes to retain his world Open Singles handball crown this week in CityWest - scooped the Man of the Match award.
